BUYING FOOD FOR THE SMALL ORPHANAGE OF PARAMI
This orphanage is located in the Dala's* shanty town in Yangon. It
doesn’t get any help from the Burmese state. It houses 19 orphans who are from 3 to 17 years old. The couple who takes care of these children is Christian, but the children belong to different
faiths and no religious sign can be seen inside the premises. They attend nearby schools. There used to be around thirty orphans in the preceding years. However, due to lack of financial
means, some of them were sent to another orphanage which receives more donations. The children get boarding and food until they complete the equivalent of the baccalaureate. Afterwards, if they
still have some family left, they go and live with them. Otherwise, they stay at the orphanage as members of the couple’s family.
*Dala is a shanty town of Yangon situated by the south banks of the Yangon River. It faces
the capital city center. Within a few years, the population grew to 100 000 inhabitants because, when the Burmese government decided to develop the capital, central areas were totally restored
and their populations were ‘invited’ to move to Dala. It has got one well only, and dozens of kilometers of pipes are out of use. The facilities are not fit to provide sufficient water
for the town. Its inhabitants use traditional ponds. These are either dry (during the hot season) or muddy.
PASDB committed themselves to help this couple, because they were moved by the
love which they offer those children.
Since November 2013, we pay for the food. the cost amounts to 110 euros a months, which is very little. The
couple goes to the market very early in the morning, thus benefitting from very low prices.
The yearly cost for helping thus amounts to more or less €1250.
